Homeopathic Remedy for Backache: Causes, Remedies, Exercises and Diet

Most people get backache at some point, whether from long hours at a desk, a heavy bag lifted the wrong way or a bumpy daily commute. If you are looking for a homeopathic remedy for backache, it helps to first understand where the pain comes from and what you can do at home to support your back. This guide covers the common causes, the homeopathic remedies often used for back pain, simple exercises and diet habits, and the signs that mean you should see a doctor first.
Already on medicine? Keep taking anything your doctor has prescribed, including painkillers, and check with your doctor before adding a homeopathic remedy.

What Is Backache?

Backache is pain, stiffness or soreness anywhere along the back, from the neck down to the hips. The lower back is where most people feel it. In most cases the pain comes from tired or strained muscles and ligaments rather than serious damage, and it often settles within a few weeks.
Doctors usually describe two kinds. Acute backache starts suddenly, often after lifting or a strain, and lasts a few days to a few weeks. Chronic backache keeps coming back or lasts longer than about three months.

Common causes

  • Sitting for long hours, especially slouched over a laptop or phone
  • Lifting heavy things with a bent back, or twisting while lifting
  • Weak tummy and back muscles from too little activity
  • Extra body weight, which adds load on the lower back
  • Age-related wear in the spine, such as spondylosis
  • Long drives or two-wheeler rides on rough roads
  • A sagging mattress or an awkward sleeping position

See a doctor first if you have

  • Back pain after a fall, accident or sports injury
  • Numbness, tingling or weakness in one or both legs
  • Pain that shoots down the leg below the knee
  • Fever, unexplained weight loss, or a history of cancer
  • Pain that is worse at night, or keeps getting worse after two weeks
Get emergency help straight away if back pain comes with loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, or chest pain and breathlessness.

Commonly Used Homeopathic Remedies for Back Pain

In homeopathy, a remedy is chosen from the whole pattern of the pain: where it sits, what started it, and what makes it better or worse. The remedies below are traditionally used for back pain. These are general indications only, so ask a homeopathic doctor to choose the remedy and dose that suit you.

Remedy Traditionally used when
Rhus Toxicodendron The back feels stiff on getting up or starting to move, eases with gentle movement, and feels worse in cold, damp weather
Arnica Montana The back feels bruised and sore after overwork, heavy lifting or a minor strain
Ruta Graveolens Overused or strained ligaments and tendons ache, and the lower back may feel better lying flat
Bryonia Alba Even slight movement makes the pain worse, and the person prefers to lie still
Hypericum Perforatum The pain is sharp, shooting or nerve-like, for example after a knock to the tailbone
Causticum Stiffness comes with a tight, drawn feeling in the back muscles and some weakness

Several of these, including Arnica Montana, Rhus Toxicodendron, Ruta Graveolens, Hypericum Perforatum and Causticum, are among the nine ingredients of E-Backache Drops.

Lifestyle and Diet for a Healthier Back

Gentle movement usually helps a sore back more than staying in bed. Small daily habits also take pressure off the spine.

Simple exercises

Do these slowly, once or twice a day, on a mat or firm bed. Stop any exercise that makes the pain sharper. If you have a spine condition or a recent injury, ask a doctor or physiotherapist before you start.

Exercise How to do it How many
Knee-to-chest stretch Lie on your back. Pull one knee gently towards your chest with both hands, hold, then switch legs. Hold 15 to 20 seconds, 3 times each side
Pelvic tilt Lie on your back with knees bent. Tighten your tummy so your lower back presses flat on the floor, then relax. Hold 5 seconds, 10 times
Cat and cow On hands and knees, slowly round your back up, then let it dip down gently. 10 times
Bridge Lie on your back with knees bent. Lift your hips until shoulders, hips and knees are in a line, then lower slowly. 10 times
Child’s pose Kneel, sit back on your heels and stretch your arms forward on the floor. Breathe slowly. Hold 20 to 30 seconds, 3 times
Walking A brisk walk at a comfortable pace. 20 to 30 minutes, most days

Everyday habits

  • Sitting: keep your feet flat and your lower back supported. A rolled towel behind the waist works. Stand up and move every 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Screens: raise your laptop or phone to eye level, so you are not bending your neck down.
  • Lifting: bend your knees, keep the load close to your body, and turn with your feet, not your waist.
  • Sleeping: use a medium-firm mattress. Sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees, or on your back with a pillow under your knees.
  • Heat and cold: a hot water bag may ease stiff muscles. For a fresh strain, a cold pack wrapped in a cloth for the first day or two may feel better.

Diet for strong bones and muscles

  • Calcium: milk, curd, paneer, ragi, til (sesame seeds) and green leafy vegetables.
  • Vitamin D: 15 to 20 minutes of morning sun, eggs and fortified foods. If your back pain lasts a long time, ask your doctor whether to check your vitamin D level.
  • Protein: dal, chana, rajma, eggs, paneer and fish help keep back muscles strong.
  • Water: drink enough water through the day.
  • Weight and smoking: staying at a healthy weight puts less load on the lower back, and smoking is linked to more back pain and slower healing.
