The treatment of acidity in homeopathy looks at your full set of symptoms, your eating habits and your daily routine, not only the burning feeling. For many people, acidity comes and goes with late dinners, spicy food, too much tea and stress.
This guide explains what acidity is, which homeopathic remedies are commonly used for it and when, and the diet and lifestyle changes that may ease it. If your symptoms are frequent or severe, speak to a doctor before you start any medicine.
What Is Acidity?
Your stomach makes acid to digest food. Acidity is the burning and discomfort you feel when this acid irritates the stomach lining or moves back up into the food pipe. When acid comes back up often, usually two or more times a week, doctors call it GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).
Signs to look out for
- A burning feeling in the chest or upper stomach (heartburn)
- A sour or bitter taste in the mouth, or sour burps
- Bloating, gas and heaviness after meals
- Nausea, or a feeling of food coming back up
- A dry cough or hoarse throat, often in the morning
What sets it off
Most people find their acidity follows a pattern. Common triggers include large or late meals, lying down soon after eating, spicy, oily or fried food, too much tea, coffee or fizzy drinks, alcohol, smoking, stress, poor sleep and extra body weight. Some painkillers can irritate the stomach, and heartburn is also common in pregnancy.
When to see a doctor first
Do not rely on home care or self-medication if you have:
- Pain or difficulty when swallowing
- Repeated vomiting, or vomit with blood or that looks like coffee grounds
- Black, tarry stools
- Weight loss you cannot explain
- Chest pain that spreads to the arm, jaw or back, or comes with sweating or breathlessness. This can be a heart problem, so get emergency help.
- Acidity that keeps returning for more than two to three weeks, even after changing your diet
Commonly Used Homeopathic Remedies for Acidity
In homeopathy, the remedy is chosen from the whole picture: what brings the acidity on, what makes it better or worse, and how you feel in general. Two people with heartburn may be given different remedies. The list below shows remedies homeopaths commonly use, with the general signs they look for. It is a guide, not a prescription.
- Nux Vomica: Often considered when acidity follows overeating, rich or spicy food, coffee, alcohol or late nights, with heaviness an hour or two after meals and an irritable mood.
- Carbo Vegetabilis: Considered for heavy bloating and gas in the upper stomach, where even a light meal feels heavy and burping brings some ease.
- Robinia Pseudacacia: Considered for intense sour burning and very sour burps, often worse at night when lying down.
- Natrum Phosphoricum: Considered for sour belching and a sour taste, traditionally with a creamy yellow coating at the back of the tongue.
- Lycopodium Clavatum: Considered when you feel full after a few bites, with bloating and gas lower in the abdomen, often worse in the late afternoon.
- Arsenicum Album: Considered for burning pain with restlessness, often worse after midnight and eased by warm drinks.
A homeopathic doctor can choose the remedy, potency and dose that match your symptoms. Taking a single remedy on your own for weeks is not advised, especially if your acidity keeps coming back.

Diet and Lifestyle Tips for Acidity
Daily habits play a big part in acidity. These changes may help, whatever treatment you use.
At mealtimes
- Eat smaller meals at regular times, instead of two or three large ones.
- Finish dinner two to three hours before bed.
- Eat slowly and chew well.
- Do not lie down or bend over straight after eating. A short, easy walk is better.
Foods and drinks to watch
- Cut down on spicy, oily, fried and very sour food, including pickles and heavy gravies.
- Limit tea, coffee, fizzy drinks and alcohol.
- Learn your own triggers. Some people react to onion, tomato, citrus fruit or chocolate, and others do not.
- Simple home-cooked food such as rice, khichdi, oats, boiled vegetables, banana and papaya sits easily for many people.
Everyday habits
- Stop smoking, and keep a healthy weight.
- Avoid tight belts and clothes around the waist.
- If acid troubles you at night, raise the head of your bed by 15 to 20 cm with blocks under the legs. Extra pillows do not do the same job.
- Make time for rest, sleep and stress relief, such as a walk, yoga or breathing exercises.
- Ask your doctor whether any painkiller you take may be adding to your acidity.
